The clutch lever on my 86 XJ700S is a little hard to pull while the lever on my 86 XJ700X is quite easy to pull.

    I have:

    ...replaced the cable
...checked the way it is routed to see if it binding
...removed the cable from the engine clutch lever and it pulls fine

Can anyone offer some suggestion as to what could be wrong? Should I start dissassembling the clutch?

What about the nut and bolt tightness on the lever itself? Is it too tight? Can't think of anything else that would hold it up outside the clutch.

I know on my bike there is an adjustment on the engine where the cable attaches to to the push lever assembly on the clutch cover. Don't know if your bike is the same?.. Or as mcrwt said you can adjust the cable at the lever.
