Hey y'all, I know somewhere on here I got the info on how to convert the 9 digit vin of some 81 and prior Yamaha to the standard 17 digit vin for my 81 750 seca. Now I'm wrenching on this 75 rd200 with a 9 digit vin and can't find diddly on a conversion or decoding method for this rascal. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Not sure if it's a 200b or just a 200 or even if it's an rd....thanks again!
    Oh said vin reads 581-000578 IMG_20190211_210838843.jpg IMG_20190211_210838843.jpg

There won't be any conversion necessary. Prior to 1981 the VIN was shorter.
All you need is to find an RD forum that has the infi that will let you decode the 9-digit VIN to see exactly what model you have.

The 581 code indicates that it is a 1976 (not '75) model RD200C, USA or Canadian model. The 1975 models (rest-of-the-world) carried a "585" prefix (odd that the earlier model year had a larger number for the code, but that's what my info shows!). Could be that the engine was swapped?

Anything's possible, but I'm second owner and has 1404 miles, if motor was swapped, I feel it was done by factory in 76. Date on stem reads 4/75 .... Intriguing....thanks for the info, k-moe and chacal. Looks like carb body's are salvageable, Reed valves look good, but this is day 3 of ATF/nuts off soak in the head with light rocking and suspending brick. Nothing, no movement from the Pistons at all. Looking like possibly piston kit instead of just rings. Parts are difficult to track down for these buggers... 13434.jpeg
