Just wanted to send out a big thank you to the participants in the forum and to the folks who have invested their time in all the write-ups. Len also deserves kudos for super quick, helpful and friendly service.

I bought my first bike last year not really knowing what I was getting into. I was pretty tentative at first but I`ve completed a bunch of things I otherwise wouldn`t have even attempted without the help available through xjbikes.

I got it back on the road tonight finally after I had to pull it off the road in September due to a crotch full of gasoline.

Here`s a few of the projects I did:
    - oil change x2 & new filter bolt
    - control cables
    - clutch
    - steering head bearings
    - valve clearance
    - Petcock rebuild (twice...first attempt on my own made it worse. Followed the write up and it`s now like new!)
    - rear shocks
    - seat cover
    - rear brake shoe check
    - replaced bent headlight mount
    - stripped and polish forks (aircraft stripper is cool stuff)
    - tank lined and painted
    - new to me exhaust (one without a gaping hole in it!)
    - new to me shiny front fender from a 550 (one without a gaping hole in it!)

Next on the list is a brake system rebuild, probably in the fall.

As you are a new rider. I strongly advise against riding before doing the brake system. The unkown condition of the brakes will only make it more dangerous while you are learning how to ride.

At an absolute minimum. Bleed the system, and get some fresh brake fluid in it before doing any riding. You will at least know that the brakes are working.

If you have to. Pick up some spare calipers, and a master cylinder to rebuild during the summer. Then it will be an easy swap out of the parts when you have everything ready.

Braided brake lines are a highly advised upgrade.
