I have a friend of the family that quoted me $200 to paint my tank & fenders. Does this seem like a reasonable price? I have everything off of the bike. He paints cars for a living and said it would come out looking like a mirror (gloss black). Really wanted something cheaper but the only other option I know would be to rattle can it.

I think its good he'll have it clear coat and everything?

I just paid 800 for mine to be done and it was a mural on mine. I thought it was steep but since I had already got the quote for my birthday I went ahead anyways.

I'm leaving the frame as is. I was mainly looking for a cheap job to replace the purple paint that's on my 85 xj.

Yeah me too. I've got some sad purple paint on my girl too. I figured I'd just paint it myself one weekend when I was bored. Probably cheaper that way. You may not need a spray gun if your Local auto store has some decent automobile spraypaint. Some fine sandpaper and elbow grease would make it look nice, especially if you're not gettin custom work done to the tank or anything

Yeah, I'm thinking of just going ahead and spaying it myself. Worst case, I completely butcher the paint job (I probably wouldn't care because I can't stand the purple). Once I start the process, I'll post some pics.

    Thanks all!

japple! with painting my tank side cover and fenders, im probably at 100-150, and im not even done or have clear coat, that is a steal!!!!! im paying probably 100 to have my stuff professionally clearcoated, if i knew ahead of time what this was like, i would have gotten quoted on the price....
but my paint requires 3 colors, 2 for the red stripe and the black... all duplicolor. that price is also including bondo, tack cloth, pre paint thinner, and uhh hi temp paint fo rhte exhaust and engine
i'd pay 200 for all mt stuff painted no doubt

That $200 is a reasonable price. Very reasonable. I just ahd my tank painted by a friend of mine, picked it up yesterday. He charged me $204.10. BC/CC black and looks georgeous!! Of course, it has been in the 40-60*F range here while he had the tank, I get the tank back and we get 4" of freaking snow last night!!!!!! At least it looks good!!

It just occurred to me that although $200 bucks can seem like a huge nut to crack can you imagine how sweet it will be to get that glossy tank back from your buddy in a condition ready to install on your bike? Schooter hit the nail on the head. He has nearly this much in his paint job and it isn( even clear coated yet. If you're a smoker. Give it up. Collect cans, hunt through your stuff for something you can live without, bag groceries, do something but hier out that paint job!

I went to an automotive paint store yesterday looking for wet/dry sandpaper and the shop had a sign that indicated they would make up rattle cans of automotive paint. Might open up some new options.

    $200 isn't bad.

I rattle can'd mine. It take HOURS of work to get it decent.
Look at how much you'll spend on sand paper, tack cloat, more sandpaper, primer, more sandpaper, and then the rattle cans, more sandpaper, and then the clear coat

IF you do it yourself, check out this clearcoat...can't remember who posted it originally, but I found it from the gurus on this site.

After a year of use, my tank looks like the day I sprayed it.
