my 85 XJ700N has just over 17,000 miles on it. I’ve had it for about 6,000 miles and this is the second oil change.. I run synthetic Mobil 1. When I pulled the drain plug it had some gue like substance that has a grayish metal look. On closer examination I found a couple of very small metal slivers. The oil I drained looks perfectly fine with no evidence of metal. The oil filter is clean and shows no evidence of metal. The spark plugs look perfect so I assume it isn’t running hot. I don’t remember seeing anything at the last oil change so I can’t compare. The only thing I’ve done “inside” the engine is valve adjustment and stator bearing seal replacement. Should I be overly concerned? The starts and runs great.

I don't think I'd be overly concerned. Make a note somewhere and observe the drain plug next time you change the oil, see what it looks like and go from there

Are the metal slivers steel or alum/magnesium? A magnet will tell the tale..........

They were stuck to the magnetic tip on the drain plug. Very very small, but still visible.

Nothing to worry about. The transmission gears will shed metal for a while, and your machine is (in tems of use) only about two years old.

Like New York—nice place to visit but I wouldn’t want to live there.
