I was looking over my title and I know what the letter designation is for the Maxim's it's a J, but on my title for some reason it's listed as a XJ 550 B, a B not the J that is supposed to be there. So what I am asking is this a mistake from titling as I am the second owner, or is there some designation for this B. I have looked and can't seem to come across anything that says there is a special model, or anything like this. I am just wondering is this bike an import, or something else or was it just a mistake? I figure that the all knowing gentleman of this fine forum could help me out, or just tell me to imagine it's a J and move on, I thank you for all your help in advance, and everyone have a good one....

The J is a model designation and not a part of the VIN. Your model is designated in the VIN by either 5K5 or 5K6 so look for JYA5K5 or JYA5K6.

Exactly - for reference 'Maxim Prime' ( the first year of the maxim 650) was 1980... it was a G model. (Mine was an 81-H and so 82 was a J)

The "B" model code was used twice by Yamaha, representing primarily 1975 and 1991 model years.

Used on the following models: FJ, FZR, RD, TT, TY, XS, XT, XV, and YZ.
Engine sizes ranging from 80cc up to 1200cc.

I would ask the titling company/agency for clarification, and probably ask them to correct the error.

    OU812,
For sure it's not a California import to you, right? It would have some extra emissions equipment, and in that case it would be an XJ700NC. What are the three digits on your frame after "JYA"? I can look it up and tell you for certain, if you haven't already.

I'm beginning to think titling companies and government entities play by their own rules with this stuff. I would ask whoever titled it.

1FH are the three digits after the JYA, and it does not have any of the California emissions crap on it so am not sure why it says that on the ownership, all titles and ownerships in Ontario,Canada are issued by the Ministry of Transportation Canada, but all`s they do when you buy a vehicle and you go to the ministry to transfer the title is they just re-copy the information that is on the old title and then add the new info like your name and adress and what not.

so if this was printed wrong in 85 when the bike was born then it will be so until it dies.

Well, 1FH is indeed a 1985 XJ700N, and it was built for the Canadian market. <shrug> Kinda makes you curious why they do these things, huh. Maybe it's your government's code for "XJ Cruiser".

On the plus side, Yamaha only planned a production run of about 5,000 units for the 1FL frame code, so it's just a little rarer than others. (15,000 1FG for the US market, and 5,000 1JJ just for California)
