Adjusting the valves

    How frequently should the valve be adjusted for an '81 XJ650? Or, how does one know when they need to be adjusted? This is my first motorcycle, so I'm just trying to learn as much as possible.

    Yamaha called for first check/adjustment at 3,000 miles or 7 months. Check/adjust every 5000/12 months after that.

    I went about 20,000 km between valve adjustments, and it was no big deal. These motors are tough, and well built.
