alright, here we are. I took the valve cover off and checked all the valves and here's what I got. intake, 1 2 4 are good. #3 a bit tight. now here's where it gets funny. all exhaust valves are tight at between 11 and 15 mm. using the chart, all have to drop 5 mm. isn't that just a little strange? also anyone know where I can get some shims? I need 1-270, 2-265, 1-285. oh yea, this is for a 82 750 maxim.

    Intake spec: .11-.15mm
    Exhaust spec: .16-.20mm

Double check your numbers and then either order new shims from Len, or swap shims with me in the shim pool.

thanks Dave. I double checked and triple checked, but I will do it again tomorrow. As far as swapping shims, that's fine with me. Let me ask this, the bike ran great at start up but once it warms up, it would develop a slight popping (backfire) and the idle would hang in the high R's and once it would come down, it dies. Need experienced advice.

Could be a vacuum leak, could be the shims, could be the carbs need rebuilding, could be TCI.....

Get the shim clearances in spec to eliminate any influence there. You can try the propane test while is running and see if it revs more or not, too.

From that point, I'd say its time for a carb rebuild, sync, and colortune.

Try new spark plugs.... Check plug wire ends, etc....

    Check coils, check tci.

The reality is right now it's still grasping at straws, try to give us more specifics ( enricher is still on/or partially/ or off...... How warmed up, any cold exhaust pipes, etc..... Any thing can help narrow it down.
