So I have an 82 xj750 seca, with the horrendous square gauge cluster. So naturally I want to replace that thing. Anyone know of or had any experience with aftermarket gauges or speedos that will work with my bike? And not too difficult to set up?

    Thanks

There's a thread here somewhere, and it's about getting rid of the "atari". It addresses the cluster issue pretty well exactly the way I plan to. I can't find it now, but if you go to "search" in top right corner, and type atari and click "Search Titles Only", 38 posts come up, and many deal with how to do it, and issues that others have faced. Good luck, and keep us posted. You may end up guiding me through the task!

Maybe you can try Maxim gauges.

Ibe never seen them but im trying to stay away from plastic. I might even just do a speedo and forget the tach if I can find one that works. Any suggestions?

Do a google search with the command site:xjbikes.com
You will find dozens of options that have been used. No matter what you do you will need to either relocate the systems monitor, or do some wiring to bypass its functions.
The maxim cluster is less horrendous and a lot less square.
Don't bin the stock cluster. They fetch good money.

The glass is pretty easy to replace. I use polycarbonate sheeting instead of glass. You have to take the cluster apart to do it though.

Oh nice those aren't bad actually. I was thinking of the 650 cluster which is still that cheap plastic look but these look good other than that bottom part. Any experience transferring these over to the Seca?

Would I be able to just use the spwe do and gas gauge off that and ditch the rest? I read that any speedo of the early xs/xj models will work. It's just a matter of finding one that's nice and small and not hideous

That is not a gas Guage .... It's a water temperature Guage. The set shown is for a 1985/1986 Maxim X (non-USA one, at that....) and the X is liquid-cooled so that is what that middle gauge is for.

The harness for the bike is different, too... Fuses are under the seat on the 750 Seca, they are behind the front cover of the cluster on the X.

You will still have to either relocate the systems monitor, or do the wiring work that is needed to eliminate it and still be able to start the bike and ride it.

One relocated Atari that was done by a member a few years ago: http://www.flyingmachineworks.com/yamaha/images/XJ750_Custom_2008-08-22_17-47-17.jpg

The safety circuits pass through the systems monitor so it can show you handy things, like when your kickstand switch is stuck (or the stand is down), so you will need to jumper all of the circuits that are monitored in order to eliminate the Atari and still have a rideable motorcycle.

Bought a set of old cb350 gauges. Tried them out, everything seems to be working good other than the tach obviously. Working on the wiring currently to get it all set to start by eliminating the monitor. Seems like it will be good to go. But no way to get that tach working huh?

There is no provision for fitting a cable driven tach to your engine.
