I have not used anything other than stock, can't speak about K&N.

Check your local Yamaha dealer, they should have the proper (stock) filter in inventory.
If not, give a shout out to XJ4Ever.

Someone else may chime in, I believe that as long as you are running an air box that any compatible filter should not require any re-jetting.

Keep it stock and avoid a lot of problems. The engineers that designed and made these machines had all the equipment, and expertise, needed to get the perfect balance. Start messing with filters and jets and you are just asking for trouble.

About a year ago I asked Chacal if he had an airfilter for my Turbo. He said he didn't and Yamaha didn't have them. Maybe he'll have one for your Maxim.
In the mean time I've ordered a sheet of foam from UniFilter and I'll pull the paper filter off of the frame and replace it. Others on here have done this.

You will need to rejet if you use the K&N.

From personal experience with my XJ700N I can guarantee you that if you go from stock to a Uni Filter your are going the really going to really lean up the mixture and will have to adjust the pilot screws to compensate. I went from the UNI which the po had installed to the stock filter and it immediately sooted the plugs. I adjusted the pilot screws to solve the problem, and as an added benefit increased mpg.

We have them for the 650 Turbo now:

HCP18424 Aftermarket washable foam style AIR FILTER, fits all XJ650 Turbo models. Using the OEM filter frame, a brand new re-usable/washable foam filter sleeve is fitted in place of the pleated paper core, resulting in a replacement filter that will last close to a lifetime. Foam filter must be periodically cleaned and re-oiled. NOTE: filter comes un-oiled and should be oiled prior to first use. Filter oil and cleaner products are listed further below. NOTE: a refundable core charge of $ 50.00 applies to this item, and a re-usable, same-model filter element must be returned for the core charge to be refunded. NOTE: "re-usable" means it is complete and has not been physically damaged in any way, in particular the plastic housing cannot be modified, damaged, or chewed up in any way. As an alternative solution, you can send in your original filter element to us for modification, and we will replace the paper filter media with a new foam core and in this way, you can avoid paying the up-front core charge (this service requires 1-2 weeks for service and delivery). Includes the HCP18450 filter seal.
