Do the air filter intake tubes go in a certain place? The tubes on my bike are different lengths and angles. This is on a 82' xj 650 maxim.

Are you referring to the airbox BOOTS (airbox to rear of carbs) or the INTAKE MANIFOLDS (front of carbs to cylinder head)?

Airbox BOOTS: all 4 are the same

Intake MANIFOLDS: the left side two manifolds (cylinders #1 and #2) are the same, and the right side two manifolds (cylinders #3 and #4) are the same.

The XJ650 Maxim and XJ650 Seca (non-turbo) airbox boots are all the same for all 4 positions, but the boots have a "slash cut" on one end (about a 40* angle). But they all fit the same way. Of course, if the boots you have a very old, they have probably shrunk (in length) as that is a common issue with the boots over time.

Or, they could be off a completely different bike that a previous owner substituted for the original boots........

Do not discount the possibility that the prior owner had no idea what they were doing. When in doubt, buy the correct replacement parts (@chacal has them).

clean them with warm soapy water, then align them all with the little tab on the airbox end in the same direction then post how they are different.
I bet someone got the wrong spare part as suggested.
