Amsoil 10W40 in my XJ750. Answers please.

My new XJ750 was all sludged up and in desperate need of an oil change. I didn't have anything but Amsoil 10W40 so I used it. I have rode about 100 miles and it seems to really like it. The gearbox especially. I got to searching and read that we should use 20W40 or 50? Should I change out my 10W40 Amsoil full synthetic immediately? I sure hate to, it is expensive stuff.

 

What is the average high temperature where you are riding?
How long do you ride at a stretch?
I'd go ahead and run what you have until the next oil change. Monitor for oil usage and starter clutch noise. Don't put a synthetic in your XJ (see the link in my signature).

 

was it CAR or MOTORCYCLE oil?

CAR oil = change immediately!

Motorcycle oil = wait until the next change, unless it starts acting up....

 

It was Amsoil motorcycle oil. It is what I use in my 2007 R1. Honesty right now all of my riding is to my parts guy and its about a 10min ride one way. I do that about 3 times a week. Last Sat the wife and I rode a 100miles at 45mph around the Lake looking for a boat engine. Other than that, it is all short trips.

 

The average high around Ohio right now is probably 80 degrees. Its not real hot for some reason like it should be. I would assume the hotter it gets the thicker the oil you would want to use.

So Rotella T is okay to use? If so I will run that, or what do YOU recommend? I have always paid $$$$ for Amsoil in my sport bikes.

 

You should be running 20W base weight oil, be it 20W40 or 20W50.

If Yamaha wanted you to use 10W oils in warm weather, they wouldn't say to use 20W40.

It has to do with bearing tolerances and things like that. I always thought Yamaha pretty much knew what they were talking about.
