I picked up my first XJ today and first bike in about 7 years. I'm sure this site will come in very handy for me as I know very little about these bikes. I found an 82 XJ 650 Maxim on craigslist and had to have it! Bought it with out even riding it, I just heard it run for a minute, after having to jump the solenoid to start it. So I guess the first things I need to find are a starter solenoid and at least a rear tire and adjust the idle up a little.
When I look at this bike I see a bobber, so thats the direction I'll probably go with it. For now I'm just going to get it running nice and ride it! That is until it starts snowing in a couple of weeks here in Colorado...

I've been busy with this thing. I can't seem to stop messing with it or looking stuff up about it. Today I took off the luggage rack, sissy bar, wind shield, and saddle bags. I took the grab bar off and sanded it smooth and primed and painted it and got it back on. Next, the plans are to sand and smooth out the lower fork, rear drive hub and brake, and the peg brackets to get them ready for paint. Then find a matte black high temp spray paint for the exhaust pipes.

One question so far.... I should say the first of many! In the air intake opening (i think is what it is) just below the left side cover there is what looks to me like a small pin that something should be attached too with a grove in the end of it that a clip would hold something in place. What is missing from my bike?
