Hey I'm tearing into my carbs right now getting them all cleaned up. I've decided to take advantage of the ultasonic cleaner here at work to clean the carbs with a simple green / water solution.

Are there going to be any parts/joints that I should use a lubricant on and what kind of lubricant should I use?

    -Matt

Seems we were all so excited about the ultrasonic we forgot to answer your question. You will need to lube the springs on the throttle shaft. I use cable lube. It is also a good idea to smear some oil on the piston walls so they slide easily. IT is also a good idea to use some anti-seize on the float bowl bolts and especially the drain screws.

you lube the slides?? Interesting...just motor oil?

That looks amazing. Did you put the float bowls in there too to clean them all up?

    One Moment Please:

Lubing the Bores where the Slides rise and fall will drastically reduce performance. If they stick ... polish them.

Those surfaces are supposed to be absolutely clean and free from any and all everything. No matter what is put there reduces performance.

    No matter what.

    That INCLUDES Marvel Mystery Oil.

ok Rick, that is what I thought. Only thing I lube is the springs for the throttle return and the enrichment circuit.

Next question, replace this needle or just reshape the tip?

Well then don't oil the piston walls. I did this with mine with no problems. Mainly to protect them until they were back in the bike. The fuel air mixture eventually cleans the oil off anyway. I actually used WD-40 and sprayed the piston and the rubber diaphraghm so it wouldn't dry out while I was waiting on the new main jets. I wouldn't recommend motor oil at all.

If that is the Original end of the Needle ... you can "Get away" with just making the tip pretty, again, and match it to one not dinged.'

If there some Brass chipped-off ... that's a different story.
Either way, the Needle doesn't look bent or out-of-shape.

The Tip sends the up-draft flow all around the Needle.

I'll be cleaning my carbs soon, and was wondering if it's safe to soak the entire assembly (minus internals), as in these pictures, is carb cleaner overnight?

    Not safe.

Unless the solvent is of the type that WILL NOT cause damage to the Butterfly Seals.

Unless the container actually says safe ... Don't use it to soak the body's.
Butterfly Seal replacement involves taking the Carb Rack right down to nothing but Aluminum.

It's a long day in camp ... if you can find the new seals.
