I heard if you just ran the collector without the mufflers you could get away with just changing the fuel air screw. Is that true and would that change my bikes performance. I also have a color tune. Xj700 1985

    It would also:

    1. change your neighbors' opinions of you
    2. require the purchase of hearing aids
    3. your Harley friends will still laugh

    lol. All True.

I've ran the straight collector for awhile and it is obnoxiously loud. Actually right now I'm running a pair of aftermarket 2-into-1 headers without mufflers (because I need to re-jet for the mufflers). I like to hear my exhaust but it's just way. too. loud.

There is no "fuel air screw" but typically you will have to increase the size of your main fuel jet by a size or 2 and possibly the pilot fuel jet by 1 if you open up the exhaust.

Not exactly, well it's not called that anyway. The pilot air screw is what he's referencing, and I agree he can't "get away" with just adjusting that.

Open pipes aren't even allowed at most racetrcks anymore and there is a good reason for that.

I ran open pipes on my Xj700 for a while, they aren't the loudest straight pipes but are not any bit quiet or ( normal either ). I didn't have to rejet, just adjust the pilot air screw. It doesn't sound like what your probably look for, its a very loud whining sound. Anything over 4500 revs is screaming. After one summer without I put them back on and haven't regretted yet. Not to mention I don't feel like an ass when riding through my neighborhood.

I run chrome turndowns off the collector on my 85 xj700. never touched the carbs and the plugs have not shown any signs of running lean.

is it loud? yes... but so is every other harley and crotch rocket in town...
