Thinking of buying a parts bike for my '82 xj650j. But the parts bike is an '81. Should I worry about interchangeability between the two?? Are they 99% the same or are there some significant differences?? anyone with experience with both of them??

Are they both YICS motors? I think the '81 might be a pre-YICS bike, while yours has a YICS motor, doesn't it?

Otherwise, pretty much the same. Use the fiche for cross referencing: http://www.yamahapartshouse.com/

82 is YICS, 81 is not. YICS is a different head with an open air passage between the combustion chambers, some sort of engineering wizardry that increased fuel effeciency without sacrificing performance. I think two of the intake boots from an 81 won't work on the 82 because the flange orientation is different on the YICS model. There might also be a difference between the tach output on the engines (one is gear driven, one is electronic, I think)

81 Non YICS & 82 is YICS. The Tach on 81 cable drive the 82 is electronic. Everything else is pretty much the same.
