There is this guy with an extremely nice and well kept looking '95 (or maybe he said '93) Suzuki VS 800. It is a V Twin, of course, and would be pretty well suited for my woman who wants a bike to ride but has never ridden. I know it being a v-twin it won't have the snappy, more power for the displacement feel of the in line 4. Also it would be better suited for 2-up than my 550. The 550 is too quick for her and I think it would get away from her before she could learn to ride it. So I want to get the Suzuki.
I don't know the mileage (he doesn't remember off the top of his head) and havn't seen the bike up close.
I do know he is an old mexican guy and, not to be stereotypical, but mexican guys and old guys do take good care of their vehicles and the appearance of this one is almost immaculate.
Before winter it was his daily rider and I saw him always riding around in town with it.
He said it doesn't have enough power to use it for more than just economical, around town riding.
Anyway, he said $1000 and it's mine. He had a FOR SALE sign with $1250 on it toward the end of fall but didn't get any offers.
Anyway, any advice? Good deal? What to check before making a decision? Don't know anything about a v-twin.

bumping... sorry i usually don't do this but might as well give it a second shot before it is lost in the abyss of the unanswered forums. Did check out the owner sites for the bike but to really get anywhere I'd have to join. Don't want to do that unless and until i get the bike.

I do maintenance for a friend of the family that has a 95 VS800. It's a nice bike and comfy. His son had bought it when he was in college(about 10 years ago) and took it for a road trip out west and back with no issues. I haven't had to do anything to it for him except regular maintenance (oil/filter change and new battery) It has enough power for me to be at highway speeds comfortably. $1000 is not a bad price if it is nice shape in my opinion.

Man, I say go for it. If you don't like it or not up to your expectations, clean her up and put her back on the market! That's what I'd do!

I believe i'll go for it then. I have to see what it has for mileage first, though. I know I can be a little more forgiving on that since the v-twins suzuki put in there bikes sorta served the purpose of more miles on the engine. They tend to last longer. But 40 or 50k wouldn't be acceptable.
