i've snapped one of the exhaust studs and I know I can replace them with the OEM part 90116-06466-00, however in Australia these are almost impossible to find. I figure if I'm going to wait forever for shipping, I'd rather replace them without something other than mild steel. Thoughts?

I was going to do the same but was advised not to do so because of reaction between the aluminium head and stainless steel ones l saw advertised. I used mild steel bar and cut it into the sizes required.

So I don't have to get the exact Yamaha ones? I can get some m6x1.0 40mm around here locally.. the originals were like 40.1 or something.

No you don't have to get the Yamaha ones. Cannot remember the size but yes threaded rod made of mild steel cut to length works. Get a thread pitch gauge if you don't have one very handy when buying bolts etc. Take the snapped off piece of exhaust stud with you when you buy the threaded rod.

You will need to heat the head to get the old studs out. I think MAP gas works best.

I changed the ones on the 650 I used to have with one size larger, and used brass studs.

Brass studs? Can’t see that working. I would suggest ht steel socket head bolts, with a suitable washer under the head.
Or steel studs (threaded rod if you will), and brass nuts.
