Anything wrong with just cleaning the parts for the master cylinder instead of rebuilding it?

I took apart the master cylinder in my 82 xj650 Maxim and all the parts look relatively fine. The piston, spring, even the rubber seals. I don't really see the purpose of rebuilding/replacing these parts with some aftermarket set. I feel like I can just clean it all. Am I wrong?

Also, would it be unwise to do the same to the caliper?

I did that with my 750, just took it apart and cleaned up. The thing is it's pretty old so the rubber parts may not be so good. But worked fine for me.

The seals were made to last 4 years. Any extra time they gave is a bonus. Brakes are too important to gamble with. An ER visit in the U.S. costs a whole lot more than a rebuild kit.
I reccomend replacing all the seals in the whole system, and the brake lines, unles you have dated reciepts that show the prior owner had that work done recently.

Er is free over here, i wouldn't risk it anyway.... Mine are as good as new, so i can't see why i should trust a reciept from a previous owner more than myself... But of cause if you're unsure just change them.

It's one of those things that I might do myself, but can't recommend that other's do without having parts in hand for me to look at. It is a judgment call for sure.
