Im a newby but Im learning, thanx to this site. anyway, I really want to put some ape hangers on my 82 maxim550, but Im not sure on the sizing of the bars. Im not sure if any old bars will fit the stock handlebar clamp. I only seem to find 1" diameter bars, but I think the stock bars are a little smaller, but Im not sure how to get an accurate measurement, in standard of metric. if not, anyone know where to find some that will work" thanx again.

if i remember correct the stock size is 7/8 inch, if you want an exact measurement you could put a c-clamp or similar just loose on the bars and measure the gap between the pads.

7/8 is the size ya need. Check ebay for options. You'll have to get longer throttle and clutch cables and a longer brake line.

i like em, they put me in a very comfortable riding position, they are not true ape hangers though because they fall just below shoulder height..

didnt have to change any of the cables or lines, picked em up cheap used at the local bike salvage.

I wanted mini apes for mine and I found that older Goldwing bars are the same as Mini apes (10' rise) so that's what I have on mine now. To get the added height, I used 4' risers that I made myself. Now my arms are straight out at shoulder height, which is perfect for me.

It's an '82 Seca I made into a bobber. Then I started adding some stuff I had in the shop like a windshield, cup holder (hey I needed somewhere to hold my coffee on the ride to work) and speakers for my radio. It's looks like I got a bit carried away, but it's comfortable!

    Schooter,
I don't have a gallery, but here are a few more shots of the bike. I've made so many changes I don't remember what I all added and when.
Here's without the saddlebags on, with the shorty mufflers and spring seat setup:

Here's the latest look at it, since I replaced the shorty mufflers with Harley mufflers off of a Sporty. The seat is off of a Sportster also. I added saddlebags and a bobtail luggage rack for carrying stuff to work.

Beautiful looking ride you've got there.

I love the headlight look and the new mufflers. Shocks look great, too.

    Congrats!

Had to chime in here. I made these 21" mosters that you see here. I stepped the bars to fit the 7/8" brake and clutch mounts and back to 1" to use the cheaper Harley throttle and grips. Rode like 17" because the bars were angled down and stepped back....they were so awesome. Rode like a charm and felt comfortable and safe. Sounds odd,but true.

Im hoping to hit ebay with my bars soon, when I sell the bike it will come with those bars and the ones on it currently.
