So, after reading all the post discouraging the use of pods and re jetting the carbs on my 1982 xj750 maxim I'm curious what the options might be for replacing a rusted out stock exhaust system? From the collector back both sides are shot. Thanks in advance guys, this site is the only reason I'm still in the XJ world.

Mac exhaust orrrrr Super Trap could be modified , some have used HD sportster mufflers, depends what condition your header and if it still has a collector. My bike has a Mac 4 into 2 exhaust , sounds good and is not to loud at high RPM ...yes I have a stock Airbox :D

My 82 maxim 750 has the Mac 4 into 1. I did rejet though because the PO also drilled the air box. My bike runs fantastic!

Whoo daddy! Just did an evilBay search for supertrapp and Mac exhaust. That stuff costs more than my bike did!

Thanks guys. Your answers compel me to ask this: If our bikes will in fact take a MAC 4n2 or 4n1, or even a Sportster muffler could there maybe be some carb jets that are more generic and have more compatibility with non-stock exhaust systems. I'm inclined to leave the air box intact, I get the impression altering it is where most of the problems are occurring when guys start doing mods.

The stock exhaust is not very restrictive. Depending on what exhaust you put on you may fond that the carbs do not need rejetted. If they do, which jets you will need will depend on which exhaust you use, and (to some degree) your altitude.

Thanks, I have two of these bikes one I'll keep stock and the other a bobber, the stock bike has a good exhaust. It's the bobber I'm needing mufflers for.

Do you still have that exhaust? I have gotten everything fixed on an 82 Maxim XJ750 except the exhaust. The collector is shot, and I'd rather stay OEM vs MAC 4 in 1 if possible. I live in Maryland.

You'd be best off shooting him a PM (private message) as this thread is stale.

I'll throw my .02 for for future readers. I ended up sourcing a complete factory exhaust for my rebuild for two reasons. #1 - Guranteed fit, keep center stand, and compatibility with stock jetting etc. #2 - Factory has double walled construction, most of the aftermarket exhaust kits are single and turn bluish fairly quick.

Thanks for your response. Where did you find a complete factory exhaust? (And how do you PM on this site?)

I had to find individual used pieces, takes patience. Sometimes some NOS parts show up on eBay but I've never seen a complete set.

Thanks. And thanks. (I just found an OEM used middle collector (that's what's totally rusted through; the headers and everything else are okay) that will fit my bike so I ordered it.)
