are these clutches comparable

    I have an 81 xj550 i need to replace the clutch, could i replace it using one off of an 1982 yamaha xj650 turbo seca or are they different

    nope, completely different motors.

    for what it's worth, a new set of friction plates and springs is usually enough to r&r a clutch... neither is expensive or hard to get.

    The 550/600 clutch is a completely different animal than the bigger bikes.

    Better to simply replace the worn components than try to use a pre-owned unit.
