Dunno what happened. Downshifted after a turn and couldn't get to second gear.

You have 3 bikes listed, which one are you talking about, though seeing this is the XJ forum I'm assuming it's the 550.
With my limited knowledge, most bikes use a "Selector" fork for engaging and disengaging the gears. To my knowledge these can either bend or break causing the issue you describe. Depending on the bike it's happened to, I'm not sure if you can go in through the bottom or have to split the cases or go in through the side to get at the fork.
There are guys on here with copious amounts of experience than me, but they'd have to know which bike you are reffering to.

Since the 550 doesn't have the disintegrating primary chain guide issue, the chances are you've either broken a spring/tab in the shifter/selector drum "mousetrap;" OR the drum screw backed out and the drum is falling off the end of the shaft (seen it happen.)

The good news is that you probably won't have to split the cases or anything too drastic like that.

The bad news? That whole mechanism lives behind the clutch on the 550s; it's outside the inner case, in the clutch housing but very securely hidden behind the clutch. You can probably get a mirror and a flashlight in there enough to see what's going on; but not enough to fix anything. You're gonna need to pull the clutch cover; and probably the whole clutch basket/assembly.

    Look in the fiche: http://www.yamahapartshouse.net/pages/p ... amaha.aspx

Most of the mechanism is under "shift shaft - pedal" except the selector drum that's outside the inner case is illustrated as part of the shift cam assembly in "shift cam - fork." If any of the springs in the former diagram are broken, or if screw #6 in the latter diagram has backed out then it would cause your problem.

Thanks Fitz! I've done the clutch before so I'm confident about taking it apart again.

By the way, I've moved to Menominee MI. Isn't there some rally up north you go to every year?
