I have been experiencing slack, and have been able to pull on cam chain and get slack when the valve cover is off...pulled the auto adjuster off and ratchet looks to work fine (holds when ratchet realesed etc) but.....i think it may have been upside down...i think the little pivot cam that holds the ratchet part in place was touching the block and allowing it to go back in...which drection does the teeth side go in..up..or down? mine was down??

Ok, I figured out which direction..only goes one way.....maybe its not fully protruding. I see marks on the teeth where it apparently rests and it's about 7-8 out of 20 teeth..thats less than half way up the tension arm.. meaning more than halfway to go.

Haynes manual does not specify but the picture shows the ratcheting cam being up in the cutaway diagram

Tried it in the up position and it doesn't seem to fit right...

OK - Like I said it does not specify which is a bit strange, Funny it shows the cam and teeth up if they go down but there are several errors in the book...

Ok, when i took the adjuster out I took 1000 grit sandpaper to the shaft..oiled it up..and re-instaled it. I did the method outlined by RickOmatic turning it counter clockwise then reversing it several times. Put the carbs back on and started it up. I guess somthing was boud up because no chain noise at all now! none! nada! weird hearing it that way actually because it has always sounded that way. Going to est drive it shortly and see if it chages..

The crowd is actually standing on their feet ....
    What an ovation for Randall68
I've never seen such a display of excitement
    They're still standing and cheering

Here comes his marks for refinishing the shaft on the Cam Chain Tensioner and quieting-down the valve train noise on his Yamaha ...
