back brake time

    so im about to do my back brakes for the first time. ive got the brake shoes but was wondering if there are any special tools that are needed and are there any other parts i should get before i start. do i have to take the wheel all the way off? any help with is would be awsome.

    yup the wheel needs to come off at elst mine does not enough clearance to remove the brake hub. THe wheel is really no big deal to take off. Once you do it you'll be like oh that was easy. Check your wheel bearings while you ahve the wheel off. THey are more than likely fine but worth a check while you ahve things apart.

    take note (or pic) of the possition of the lever on the spline, before you take it off, there should be a dot on the shaft. Grease or no freeze the axel before you replace, there was a thread that went on for about a month with a guy trying to get a rusty axel out!

    i changed mine last year and the stopping power went way down
    wouldn't even lock the wheel
    took it all apart again and found only about a quarter of each shoe hitting
    hit the high spots with some emery and it got better but it took awhile
    do rough up the drum with emery cloth while it's off

    Remember to tighten the front bolt on the 'tension' arm that holds the brake cover from rotating. You don't loosen this bolt, but it needs to be re-tightened anyway, since deflecting the arm will loosen it.

    Loosen the Pinch Bolt on the Rear Brake Camshaft Lever and remove it from the Shaft of the Rear Brake Cam Shaft.
    Remove the Camshaft by pushing it through to the inside.
    Clean the Inside Diameter of that hole the Camshaft came out of by twisting some ScotchBrite Pad in it to remove any oxidation.

    Clean the Shaft of the Rear Brake Cam.
    It might be necessary to refinish it depending on its condition.
    If you need to refinish it ... mount the Cam in a Vice and using 400 Sandpaper strips about 3/4" wide ... "Shoe-shine" the surface of the Shaft to a new, clean, machined-like surface.

    The Camshaft has and "Hour Glass" cut.
    Pack the center cut with waterproof synthetic grease upon reassembly.

    hey you guys dont have any pics that you could post with like some arrows pointing to the bolts that need yo come off when changing the rear drum brake.im not sure if the set up on my bike are the same cause so far im notcing that some parts on my bike are from difrent bikes. i am scard to take the axel out of the bike cause of rust.. thanks

    You're better off doing it sooner than later. You don't have to do anything beyond checking the Axle.

    But, you should see that that Axle is going to be able to be withdrawn in the event that you do need something done requiring the Axle to be pulled.

    If the Axle comes out without a fight; clean it up and add a smear of AntiSeize and you'll have piece of mind knowing you can remove it to fix a flat or reline the Rear Brakes.

    yes in deed take rickomatics word as if it were gold .

    Clean the threads and use anti seize. I have done almost every bolt om mine.

    If you have the time read rickomatics HOW TO articles. they are clear and very accurate some are real time savers.

    This has been the best website when it comes to getting things done.

    well it was easy, got the new brakes in with out a problem the axel bolt came right out it was lubed up. i used bluemaxim story that was a lot of help so thank you bluemaxim and thank you to everyone who contributed to my question.
