I've tried a search to no avail, so I'll ask the question - has anyone posted a comprehensive step-by-step guide to first tuning ?

Reason I ask is that a friend told me that it may not be carb/vacuum leak/etc issue at all that's causing my overrevving-at-idle-when-warm. He says that it could be a valve problem, and that I should check these 8O . He always leaves a carb til last, after checking valves, coils. Is that sound thinking ? He didn't offer to do the work of course !

I'm happy to take the long and learning route, in a methodical way, rather than waste a lot of time and money on jets/needles etc, and know that I've covered all the bases.

What is the order of tasks that anyone would recommend ?

Adjusting the valves is never a bad idea.
However I don't see how that or coil trouble would cause a fast idle.
I think your problem still lies somewhere in the carbs or intake system.

there may be a leak between the carbs themselves and the head...look on the head side.....rubber rings that seal the intake boots to the head have a tendancy to split, causing a lean mixture which raises the rpm @ idle. does it starve under power @ high rpm's?

    Hi jd,

What I want to avoid if possible is a lot of jet experimenting/pulling of the carbs - what a PITA job ! Sorry for confusing the issue.

Going by what you good people here have been saying, I have assumed it was carbs or intake, since it is only happening after running for a few km, and not from cold.

This guy's given me some 120 jets (I'm running 118's, which someone here has said is causing lean). Will try them and let you all know what happens.

Since he's wrong about valves here, I have to ask - the pilot jets are all fairly mangled by screwdriver abuse, but the bores seem ok, and it's all submerged in petrol so not a problem, right ?

One of the needle jets is different from the others in that it can take a screwdriver. You can see it as you look through the carb. Affect airflow ?

    As ever, thanks.
