so, here's what's going on, my xj 650 maxim was running fine yesterday and earlier today, but when riding this evening at around 3500 rpm it started backfiring. i used high beam to signal to someone that they could take their turn at a stop sign and the headlight and gauge lights stopped working, upon inspection of fuses i found a broken fuse connector, a burned out fuse, and another fuse that was being held to its wires via one hose clamp and a wad of duct tape, could these faulty parts cause backfiring, the wiring that was being held together with a hose clamp and duct tape is the primary power lead for the ignition switch, and the burned out fuse was for the headlight and gauges. any help would be appreciated

Gotta LOVE it! The creativity of some POs is boundless.

Sounds to me like you've already discovered the need to upgrade the fuse box...
