Ok, so miracles do happen. I just recently found and bought back my old 82 XJ650 that I use to ride when I was in the military and sold about 15 years ago. Small world!
But that's a story for another post. I have got to get my baby back on the road.

The bike starts but idles rough, and has no power when given throttle. It can be ridden at slow speed but has no top end. I think it is running rich because it revs extremely high when the choke cable is pulled or even attached to the thumb lever, so I have to keep the cable disconnected from the handle bar lever. I did a good cleaning on the carbs and replaced the pilot jets because they were chewed up, thinking this was the cause of problem, but it still runs bad. What am I overlooking?

Also, thanks to Chacal for hooking me up with the right jets and gaskets. You are the man.

Dryed gas gets in some of those small passages and its real tough to get that junk out of there. You will need to pull the carbs back off and run wires through as much as you can. Read up on Ricks carb cleaning.

Its probably a combination of things, dirty carbs and the rack a little out of sync. Even with clean carbs it'll stumble if they're not synced. Did you split the rack, where did you set the mixture screws to?

Carbs may indeed be the main issue but....
Have the valves been touched since you last owned it?
How many miles logged since last adj?

Didn't separate the rack and didn't dare try. As for the sync I have not performed one yet. I am in the process of making a pics tool. Guess I should check the valve clearances first though.
I haven't touched the mixture screws. They still have the covers on them from the factory. Kind of scared to tweak those.

Wow, you do have your wofk cut out for you.
But that is so cool that you have your old bike back that
the work ahead will be very worth it.
The mix caps are very easy if a little nerve racking to be sure.
Use the lightest drill you can find/barrow ( I used a milwakee
Magnum with a 1/2" chuck Too heavy for fine work).
Use a very small bit. Tiny.
GO SLOW AND ONLY BARELY BREAK THE SURFACE.
once a very little hole is through then just pry off the plug
with any pointed object that will fit.
The screw will be at leased 1/8" under the plug or most likely 1/4"
so you do have a small amount of room to work with. But
the bone heads at the factory could have the screw anywhere under
    there so just be carefull.
Air/fuel mix is absolutly essential if you want your bike to run right
otherwise all the other work will be for not.
