I have a '83 XJ 750 Maxim and was wondering how to take the baffles out of the pipes. I was thinking of just breaking the welds on the pipes but don't want to mess up the chrome. Has anyone else tried or done this?

It may be possible to use a hole saw to cut out the baffle from the back of the pipe? I know this has been done extensively on other forums and works very well. I've done it on my Honda VT1100 Shadow to get a nicer deep rumble from the pipes. I am not sure about your muffler however. You may want to search for a schematic diagram to see just how they are put together first.
I found it just as easy to go buy some cheap mufflers on Ebay and keep the stock ones for future use, just incase. PD

i wouldn't do it.. from what ive seen heard.... it messes up the chroming so you have to rechrome or powdercoat them and it doesn't sound that good. since they are techniclay slip ons i just un bolted the megaphones and got a great sound, plus it cleans up the look of the bike.

I just got done making my own baffles. The owner before me had pounded them out a long time ago and just did not sound good. I did some research on baffles and think I now have a much better sound. I have also packed loosely with ceramic fiber to act like a muffler ( I do not recomend this I only use it until my fiberglass material arrives. ) With the ceramic fiber added it sounds smooth and mellow, with just enjoug growell to it. I work on multiple school campus' so I can't have really loud pipes.

The baffles look ok from the back. A little red-neck but do the job.

I will try to post a pic in my gallery this weekend.
