So I got an 83-84 XJ750 maxime in July, everything except the old fusebox which I replaced, seems to be running great.

Recently it hasn’t been charging the battery.. There’s no new noises and doesn’t seem to be any loss of power, at least not in the bottom end. I haven’t taken it on the highway since the battery charging issue because I got stranded, so I almost never make it into 3rd gear since, unfortunately.. lol

I’ve still been riding it to work for about a month now, and everything seems fine, except the charging. It starts right up and rides fine no problem. I got a new battery to check if it was a battery issue, it’s not.

From my limited knowledge, if this was a stator or regulator issue, I’m assuming it wouldn’t still be starting right up and running as well as it does..? I have to take off and charge the battery every 2-3 days.

I feel like I’m missing something, probably simple. Because the charging system seems like it’s fairly straight forward, but it running fine and as long as I have without the battery charging has me questioning. However this is only the second bike I’ve tinkered with.. With many more to come haha

Could the stator still be running the bike for that long but be too weak to charge the battery at all? Or maybe faulty wiring not allowing it to charge..

    Any input is greatly appreciated.

This can happen with a bad rectifier/regulator.

Pretty sure the whole bike runs off the battery.
The charging system is just a charging system for the battery.

    3 things.
    1. Multimeter on the battery while running should show an increase up to13.5v odd volts on revving.
    2. Check the connectors from the regulator to the generator (they melt!)
    3. Check the generator brushes to see if they are long enough or stuck in their housings.
