If you read my blog entry recently you remember I was having problems starting my bike. It happened again when i was at work some 30miles from home. I figure it's prolly the battery, as a very quick jump start got me back on the road. Last night I went to the local shop and got a battery for $34 and a battery tender for $53. The nifty thing on the tender is that it comes with a pig tail i bolt to the terminal that allows me to have a socket on the outside of the bike. It's charging the battery right now.

My question for all the wise folk here is I took my volt meter to the battery I pulled, and it's still reading between 12 and 13 volts. Shouldn't that be enough? I'm really ignorant when it comes to electricity, and would guess that it's a matter of how much voltage for what length of time and the battery couldn't handle it.

Can someone explain this to me? Any links would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance,

    -Snick

Short answer - yes, that should be enough.
    However,
Long answer - theres a few things that can cause behaviour like this.
Your battery might be losing it's overall capacity through age, sulfation, etc - which would still test with good voltage, but the current just isn't there.

Or it could be as simple as corroded terminals or connections -- including the ground cable that goes to the engine. Corrosion on these increases resistance and decreases the ability to flow electricity - I had that happen on mine -- the ground was bad and made for nearly impossible starting.

Also check for loose connectors at the solenoid, the connectors to the regulator & TCI under the seat, and at the fuses.

Lets us know how it goes...

Im having about the same issue except my battery is not good. Even trying to jumpstart it wont work.

My suspect part is that round solenoid looking piece right off the batteries + terminal. If I try to jump on the other side of the contact the motor turns over like right now. Somewhere in this piece electric isnt being allowed to flow through. So Im replacing it... A whole $32 piece and a new $50 battery...

    weeee

SHould be able to ride in a few weeks!
