Battery Killer

    Hi All,
    I have a 1982 XJ650 Fore-Seca-n Turbo. I had it running, let it set and got back to it a few weeks ago. The battery was dead. Not discharged dead, but d.e.a.d. So, I got a new one. Started right up. I went fof a ride and it was doing very well. Then it seemed like it was having a familiar fuel issue, died, wouldn't start.
    As always when I am reviving an old bike I pushed it home. Some punk kid yelled, "Hey, nice bike you have there!". Grrrr
    I tried starting it later. It turned over but would not start. I switched two different fuel pumps. Then the rapid fire solenoid click. Then dead. Not discharged dead, but again d.e.a.d. That's two killed batteries.
    I tested the rectifier and it tests the same as my '83 Seca Turbo that I ride all the time
    What can be killing my batteries? This is getting expensive....

    Something I do on ALL my bikes I purchased used us see if alternator is charging battery.

    Charge battery
    Put digital volt meter across battery terminals. Measure voltage (should be close to 12.7 for fully charged battery)
    Turn on ignition but don't start
    Measure voltage (should drop down some)(12.2-12.5V might be typical)
    Start bike, let idle
    Measure Voltage (12.4-13V could be typical)
    Increase throttle to say 3K rpm
    Measure voltage (should jump up above 13V or at least higher than 12.7 from what it was at idle.

    Last fall I was all excited when I got a 78 xs650 running with $40 in carb rebuild kit and about 4 hours cleaning carbs. then tested alternator. Rotor was burnt, Regulator was not regulating and one leg of the rectifier was blown. $175 in parts to fix and hours of labor researching, pulling apart and putting back together and testing

    This will tell you that the alternator is charging the battery.
