    +1 On that thing^^^^

It looks like the perfect crossover from street to sport.

I say we start a petition.

There's nothing all that great about this bike: http://olive-drab.com/idphoto/id_photos_klr.php

But it was the official Marine Corps Motorcycle, when I was in the Marines and I always wanted to snag one. Kinda like some guys want jeeps. Kawasaki KLR 250, I guess it got replaced by the 650 later. I hear they even have a diesel(!) one.

I want one in desert camo.

anything pre-82 yamaha, i love them all........once they are chopped into something cool, cafe, bobber, tracker whatever, the only newer bike iould consider is a vmax and it would need to be stripped to meet my taste. i have been riding yamahas exclusively since the 80s. i eat sleep and poop tuning forks

1917 HD sitting in the WWI museum in KC. This one saw combat action, it was used by US and British soldiers and was brought over on a boat in 1919 and stored by a collector in his garage until he donated it for the museum. Crazy design on the Hog, it has two chains-one from the main crank to the gear 'box' and then one to the rear wheel.

If you haven't been I highly recommend going-it is plain amazing what they have there and you will learn more about WWI and the soldiers than you knew was possible.

So does your 550; you just can't see your primary chain.

That's not a "crazy" design at all, that's how it was done for many many years thereafter. It's just that as bikes evolved, the primary chain became harder to see, and most manufacturers eventually eliminated it altogether opting for a geared primary drive once the engine and gearbox moved into the same case. Virtually ALL "pre-unit" bikes (separate engine and gearbox, like my Norton) had a chain primary.

    broberg,

Nice Ducati. Got a question tho'...Where exactly would a person regularly ride a bike like that (other than a race track) the way it's suppose to be ridden (at about 2000mph):D? 70, 80, 90 or even 100mph every where you'd go wouldn't do that bike justice for what it's probably capable of which wouldn't satisfy the "getting the most for my buck" issue I'd have with what one of those cost. BigFitz...you just had to do it didn't you. Every time I see a picture of one of those I tell myself I'm a "cruiser" dude and try to picture that bike in a maxim model. Hell, who am I foolin'...damn, that's a nice bike. You did say that's a '05 correct? Mtnbike, what year is the black one? Wonder what the 2012 looks like.

    Gary

3/22 Edit: Now that I know I can say...all properly recommissioned XJ's are good steeds. Not to hijack thread but here's one for the members...How many people have offered to buy your bike and were serious about it? Me...2.

Should have been more explicit. I didn't mean the HD design was crazy because of the two chains, but the exposed, way back design of the primary and gear box, and the the huge sprocket that the primary drives at the box.

This picture shows what I mean. The linkage leading down to the box was also quite complex. And by today's standards I do see this as an eccentric and unusual design-I guess I haven't been around enough ancient moto's to know that this was common.

Obviously I still would like to ride/own one of these bad boys!
