I have an 82 xj750 that has 24k on the engine. I get 38 mpg right now and I was wondering if there is anything I can do to get better mileage. Any ideas? or should I just be thankful?

I get 46 with a Seca 750 with a 4 into 1 exhaust, and tuned a bit lean. That was on a 100 mile trip at exactly 60 MPH. I see light tan plug insulators.
I get 42 MPG riding it fast and aggressive.
If you monitor your plug color, you can incrementally turn your Pilot screws in. Taking written notes on each adjustment, photograph your plugs even ! (but don't go too lean)

I get roughly 40 mph on my 82 750 maxim. (Averaged on mostly 30 mile highway + 10 mile street trips - to and from relatives several times).

Though running good (I think) I still need to check valves, go thru the carbs and make the normal adjustments next spring.

But another member told me he got similar MPG before and after he modified stuff.

How many miles since your last valve adjustment?

How many miles since your last carb service/float level check/carb sync?

my 82 750 gets 45 - 50mpg for my normal commute to work, usually 45-65mph.

my bike is running the infamous pod filters, and 4-1 exhaust.

i think the speed and overall aggressiveness is the main killer of fuel efficiency, but carb tuning is very important as well.

have to say I am not sure when the last valve adjustment was. Just had the carbs cleaned 2 weeks ago. It is starting and running great. as for the running it lean. I do not know how to do much of anything on the bike but will check the manual for how to adjust that. Thanks guys! Any more ideas or recommendations?

    Sure.

Check/adjust your valve clearances; check the float levels using the clear tube method with gas; do a running vac sync.

Any one or all of the above items being out of adjustment can drag down fuel economy. Have you done a compression test?

What do your plugs look like?

yes the bike is stock. as for the plugs, they look good. I am going to read up on the valve adjustment and see if it is something I can do. Thanks for the help.

Great tips on the valves and carb tuning for sure.

    Haven't seen it mentioned yet....

You can also go on a diet. Weight decreases fuel mileage.
