Bigger Fuses...

    Hey All,

    I just finished replacing the fuse holders in the Maxim (thanks for the tip regarding liberating the fuse clips from the new fuse block Mr. Fitz :) ) and noticed that there were a few 15's standing in for the 10's. Is this simply the PO trying to avoid a fuse pop perhaps? I didn't try to start it after the upgrade, but the tail light and blinkers worked, lol. Anyone ever run into this?

    If you know that those fuses should be 10A, I would put 10s in and see how it runs. Should be fine.

    Putting larger fuses in allows the circuit to draw more amperage (due to increased resistance in the connectors etc.) and could cause your wire sheathing to melt or worse, catch fire.

    Yeah I saw the same thing (15 A fuse in a 10 A spot). I don't remember which circuit it was...luckily the only electrical damage I found on the entire bike was the imfamous red wire melt in the rectifier/regulator. I promptly changed all the fuses to the recommended ones for the circuits (after putting in a new fuse box)

    I would chalk it up to your PO playing electrician...and not being able to figure out why the 10 A fuse was blowing <- not solving the problem.

    blowing fuses is an excelent sign of a problem. a fuse of higher amperage ratings is a great way to get you to a place where you can find the problem. otherwise the higher amp fuse is just ignoring the problem allowing it to become a serious problem when your even further from home.

    You should be grateful the PO fused those Circuits with ONLY 15 Amp Fuses.
    Some folks have found:

    Cigarette Wrapper Tin Foil
    Bolts
    Nails
    Bare wire

    My favorite story ... because I can't really believe some numb-skull really did it ... is the story about a guy who checked his Fuses and found a live round of ammunition stuck in the Fuse Holder.

    Yes. I heard that somebody else did it and the round went off hitting somebody.

    I don't believe that, ... either!

    That would make a SWEET mod. Replace the stock fuse box and hide it, and bolt the stock on in the air box with spent cartridges, or ones with fake slugs. Scare the crap out of the next owner.

    winterman97 - I've heard of using a resetting circuit breaker, or turn signal flasher as a good way to test the circuit that is shorting...that way you still cut the power and save the circuit. But as long as you hear the click, you know you still have a short.

    Thanks guys,

    Turns out she started no problems, next stop is a visit to canadian tire to pickup a few extra 10s and a 20!

    one more thing, do i need to use a slow-blow or fast-blow or is there such a thing with this size of fuse? Looks like that size (AGX right?) only has the one type.
