Just replaced the head gasket and timing chain on my 82 650 maxim. Rode ten miles with no problems and then the bike just stopped running at a stop light. My starter doesn't work half the time so i've been roll starting it and now it doesn't work at all and it seems as though i'm not getting any spark, just compression. My battery is at full charge and all my lights come on, but she won't start. Any ideas?

First fix the starter. Might be the solenoid or starter , check and see.
How about the fuse box. they are the source of many problems. The old Yamaha terminals corrode and loose contact. Make sure you have power to the ignition then go from there. Could be lots of things, start with the simple things and eliminate it.

What do you mean, ... "Your Starter doesn't work half the time"?

    What going on there.
Once we figure-out what you mean by that, ... we'll have a clue.

    82 -- 650 Max -- ??? -- ???

Just an idea, a wise man on xjbikes forum once told me " what did you just do before the problem started? "
Back track a little and I bet you will find the problem / problems.

Sometimes the bike starts when you push the button sometimes it just clicks and the oil light illuminates. The solenoid was replaced ten miles ago, shouldn't be that.

    Disconnect the Battery
    Pull the Starter
    Undo the (2) Loooong Bolts.
Duct Tape the Gear end so it dont fall off.
EASE the Aluminum end away from the Motor.
    Look-in with flashlight.
If its dark and nasty ...
    Clean-out Aluminum end.
    Spray-in:
Electric Contact Cleaner ... (Radio Shack) ... or ...
    Isopropyl Alcohol ... (Pharmacy)
Remove Cap ... stick nail through seal ... squeeze!
Spray-in the Alcohol until what comes OUT is as clean as what you spay IN.
    Look at Brushes with Flashlight.
Replace the Brushes if beyond limit.

Didn't have time to pull out the starter today, but i did test my starting circuit cutoff relay. it's toast. the strap that holds it to the frame was broken and looks like it was just floating around on top of the carbs. hopefully be able to take a look at the starter tomorrow to see if i need to order some new brushes as well.
