I have an 82 650 maxim and the bike won't start. When I push the start button the oil light comes on. I tried jumping the starter by cross connecting, it turns over but will not fire. Also my bike is stuck in gear, as if the tranny is frozen, gear lever will not move.
I bought this bike 2 years ago for $200 as a project bike, when I looked at it the guy jumped the bike and it started up but did not stay running. The bike also had some cosmetic problems as it was dropped on the right side, but I have since taken care of those.
I have bought a new tank, and a new starter switch, as well as a new instrument cluster (well used off of ebay)
    Any advice would be great!!
    Thank you

with the bike on centerstand. rotate the back tire while trying to shift the gears. see if the shifter moves then.

or just try rocking the bike back and forth while trying to shift the gears. it's not uncommon for a bike to bind a little that the shifter won't move.

check your battery voltage. sounds like youi've got enough juice to crank her over but not enough to kick in the ignition. in which case your motor is probably cranking over slower then normal.

i'm not sure on motorcycles. but if a car measures below 12volts. the engine will crank but not fire up.

course, if the starter motor is worn out. the bike may not fire up even if the battery was fully charged as the starter will be pulling way too much amperage. leaving nothing for the ignition to kick in.

take a test light and probe the wire going to the solenoid. if she don't light up when the start button is pushed, that's your problem. if it does light up then the solenoid is probably bad.
