So i took apart the carbs and cleaned them as to the specs of the rickomatic "how to". I was all excited cause they looked all shinny and new.

I put them back on the bike and was expecting it to start. Ok... 1 , 2 ,3 ... tryed starting it and... nothing just turned over and sputtered a bit.

I sprayed some quick start near the air box intakes and vroom... she started and was rough, i expected so since they havn't been balanced yet.

it ran for a good minute but at really high rpm's.

It died after a while and then would not start unless i was using started fluid. I checked the fuel and yes it was getting to the carbs.

Any ideas? I would love to get this running and I want to do it my self. One, for self gratification and 2, I don't want to get rapped at a bike repair shop.

i had the same problem did you try bench synching the carbs? if not that will make a huge difference. there is a forum on how to do it with paperclips, its simple taking the rack off and on again is the hard part.

well she fires up so thats good! Maybe your choke is fully open ..that will cause it to rev high, Is your throttle cable sticking? ... I just brought mine to life a month ago .
I would suggest you go trough the forum "search " feature . Youd be suprised that there are alot of us in the same boat at one time. There is an Ocean of great tips and hints and solutions in there. Good luck . Process of elimination. Sometimes problems can be resolved by things as silly as, not having enough gas in the tank , dirty plugs, weak battery, poor fuse connection .

Sounds good. Thanks for the advice.

Lucky me i went out and tryed starting it again and vroom. It started and stayed running... only problem being that it was staying at 4500 rpm's with the idel screw all the way let out.

I did bench sync the carbs how ever I am guessing that the carbs just need a little more adjusting with the sync screws?

Is there a specific gauge of paper clip to use?

Some times it still doesn't start but with just a little quick start she works. Then she starts every time after that. I let it sit for 3-4 hours or so and again she won't start unless i use a litte quick start.

    Any ideas?

Since it runs, sync them on the bike--search for "old school 1 gauge carb sync" because a 2 or 4 tube MANOMETER won't work until you are close to home. Don't forget to build the baffle, and run a box fan on that motor.

I like the 4 tube so I can see what's going on in real time, see the changes of the slightest tweak.

More than likely you need to finish your synching job.

It's not really the size that matters as much as the fact that you're setting all the carbs using the same whatever. You can use a paperclip or, as Rick suggests, a business card. The tool used isn't as important as setting them all with the same tool. Hope that makes sense.

This sounds to me like you didn't get the enrichment circuit wells clean enough when you did your service. I'd wait on synching the carbs and pull them back off. Remove the fuel bowls and clean the tube and orifice for the enrichment circuit. I'm assuming you have Hitachi carbs. If you have Mikunis then nevermind. Also, you should be able to stick the tube of a can of carb cleaner into the orifice (the upper one in the picture) and squirt fluid through it out the large well (the lower one in the picture). If it's properly cleaned it'll shoot that fluid about 10 feet out.

When I bench sync't my carbs I used a torch oriface cleaner to set up the butterflies. I use an old windsheild washer fluid tank for a hanging gas can, I forgot to plug the air line for carb #2 ,fuel petcock prime line and she had a really high idle till I pluged it.

Just a little advice when you are shooting the carb cleaner in the enrichment holes don't look to see if it comes out of the hole. It will nail you right in the eye. Yup I learned from experience!!!lol
