    Hi guys,

I was trying to start my '96 Seca II...it's usually a process anyway, but this day I was having more trouble for some reason. And I eventually when I pushed the starter, the lights would go to a weird dim setting, the oil light would stay on and i got this really weird rapid clicking noise; the engine doesn't even try to spin

    is it a dead battery?

only way to find out is put a meter on it and test it for its voltage, but if the lights are dim when you turn on the bike, thats a good sign of a weak battery, and toss in the click noise, thats another sign of a weak solonide or battery. Check all your connections on the battery to ensure your getting good contact and stick battery on a slow charge for 5 hours, (1-2 amp or so) and give it some time.

Sounds like the carb needs a little cleaning to. If it is a "process" to start normally, than on top of an electrical issue you may need to pay attention to the fuel enrichment circuit. That is of course after you figure out the reason for low voltage.

update: voltage was low; got the battery charger/maintainer going

is carb cleaning something i could do myself? or is it relatively daunting?

There are write ups on the forum. They seem more daunting the first time than they actually are. If you follow the write up, and take your time it isn't bad. The fuel enrichment circuit gets clogged up in the carb bowls. The easiest thing that can be done it to remove the carbs, take the bowls off, clean fuel enrichment circuit, bowls, jets, and reassemble the bottom end of the carbs. This is a half ass way of doing it, but it may help your hard starting issue. You would need new bowl gaskets. This is of course the very least you could do to clean them, and like I said before is just cleaning them half ass. Some people would consider it useless to just clean the fuel enrichment circuit without a through, full carb break down.

Def look up the carb cleaning right up. I think Rickomatic wrote it.
