Hello everyone, this is my first post here so nice to neet everyone.
I got my first bike this summer. Its a xj650. When i got it i changed the oil, got a new air filter, got rid of the old gas, got new spark plugs (yes i checked and all 4 spark), and a new battery for it. When i went to start it up it wouldnt turn over unless the choke was in a very specific position about 4/5ths fully open. And it wouldnt stay running either. Whenever i would let it idle, move the choke or give it any gas or it would die immediately. So i figured it was the carburetor and took that out, disassembled and cleaned it (2 of the float bowls were abolutely filthy, other two were fine) and i just put it back on today and it has the same problem. Admittedly it sounds a little better and starts a little easier but it dies immediately after letting it idle for about 20 seconds, moving the choke, or giving it gas. This is my first time working on a carburetor so im just assuming i put it back together wrong. But i honestly have no idea what could be wrong with it so im asking yall for help

    Thank you

Welcome the forum and the world of XJ. And thank you for saving another XJ. If your XJ starts and runs it is unlikely you put it together wrong. Here is a link to the Church of Clean, https://xjbikes.com/forums/threads/in-the-church-of-clean.14692/, that should help explain things. These carburetors are not complex but are sort of niggely to get "just right". When they are the bikes are SWEET. My first XJ I had the carburetors off and on 3 times before it was reasonable. There are several little bitty bits and passages that have to be clean and clear before it will run at much more than idle. The floats need to have the fuel levels set and there are adjustment screws under no tamper covers that need to be adjusted. The covers are not hard to remove. All that info is here and most of that is in the link. They don't have to be perfect to run well but are well worth the effort to get just right and be really nice. Again, not hard to do but you do have to pay attention to detail and not just rush through the doing. Good luck and have fun!
