My blinkers light up solid, but never blink.

    Where do I start? :)

    (Edit: 1982 maxim XJ 550 :)

    Flasher's dead.
Bulb wrong kind or plugged-in wrong.
    Burnt-out bulb.
Alternator Brushes too short and system not charging sufficiently for flasher unit to open and close.

right under the fuel tank. undo the tank bolt after you remove the seat and prop it up with something, or easier yet just pull it off. it'll be attached to the frame. looks like a cannister. probably metal.

If I am not mistaken, the flasher is a black rectangular piece, that is attached to the frame by a simple bracket, on the bottom of the spline that runs down the middle of the frame (that the coils bolt to) which puts it just in front of the seat, or rather where the seat would be if you hadn't removed it to remove the gas tank to get to the part in question. Once you unplug it, it should slip right out. If I am mistaken, someone please tell me.

However (comma, pause for effect) check the easy stuff (eg bulbs) first.

I should have known someone would answer the question the same time as I did...

Below the gas tank is a square solenoid looking device plugged in and being held in place by a square rubber boot.

It looks just like the device about 1 foot farther back thats below the seat (in fact, thats the one I replaced thinking it was the flasher. However, the bike would no longer start with the part i put in, the engine would just turn over so I figured out I had the wrong part).

Doing maintenance on these machines is NOT supposed to be a Mystery.

You can learn a lot and have all your Mysteries solved by buying a Workshop Manual.

I'd like to suggest you INVEST in a Factory Book. Best money you'll ever spend ... because the instant you open the cover and become enlightened about what it is you need to do and know how to do it ...

The Factory Book PAID for itself!
