Bobber / chopper project.

Hi all
With all the cool bobber projects in this forum, you have inspired me to start my own. This bike has been sitting in a corner of our lunchroom at work for the last 5 years. I was looking for a inexpensive project so i talked to the owner and struck a deal. The only one that wasn't happy was my wife. Anyway got it home this weekend started to tear it down. Crath thanks for the inspiration... here are some pics.

So far its been a blast. Cant wait to ride her.

 

My wifey wasn't to happy with me either. I spent a lot of this winter at my friends house working on mine, and when she saw that I had made it a solo seat well you can guess how that went over :lol: .
I really like the fat bob tank haven't seen one on a xj yet that looks cool. I see a lot of hard tails and I wonder how they hook up? When I was testing and tuning on mine I had the shocks cranked up and it seemed to light up the rear tire really easily.
I've only built one bike but the best advise I have is take your time, do it your way, and do it right the first time you don;t want to rush through it and skip things you will regret later. Good luck and keep the pics coming!

cant wait to see the tank mounted up, i'm seriously thinking about the same tanks for mine (have a look how its going on my thread "crashed")

Hey Tomcat Nice ride just the look Im going for. What did you do with the space between the tanks I was thinking of making a bezel and mounting the gages and such there.

 

That'd work out. I'm not runnin any gauges......
i got the ignition, headlight, and taillight switches mounted there.
Bikes in pieces right now, wanted to rebuild. Goin back together soon

 

Those fat bobs do look sweet. Good choice. Nice on the single downtube, tom.

 

Just a random question tom, to what degree did you rake your forks?

What metal gauge thickness did you use for a seat pan?

 

The metal for the seat pan was 1/16th inch plate, but I am going to wrap the edge in 1/4 inch round bar to make a nice finished edge. 16th is to weak on its own. I would use 1/8 plate if I wasn't going to finish the edge.

Mack...i got about 40 degrees of rake on er, give or take a couple...
runnin 8" over tubes.

 

That's cool that you're making your own seat pan. So what's the plan for it? Gonna wrap in it leather or leave it bare?

 

The "PLAN" is to weld 1/4 inch round bar around the edge (very neatly) then make a seat pad contured to my...seat cover it with leather then rivet it to the pan with the ends of 45 caliber casings...or at least thats the plan

Well got a little more work done this weekend. I got the round bar welded to the edge of the seat pan





Fabricated some z bars, not sure if I will use them tho.

Seat Pan is done. finished it off Tonight . I'm quite happy with the results
