My speedo needle has a nasty problem of bouncing around, sometimes its hard to make out my speed. Also there is some grime on the inside of the glass that I'd like to clean out. If I open up the speedo is there anything I can do to stop the bouncing?

Bouncing speedo needle to me means bad cable. I'd check to see if the cable is in good condition before taking apart the speedo itself.

when my tach was bouncing around it was actually unscrewing and falling out, so check that also.

    Clean everything.

Cable, sheath and the Instrument and inside the glass.

Flush-out the sheath with Carb Cleaner
Wipe the Cable with a rag soaked in Carb Cleaner
Lube the inside of the sheath with really light oil
    Same for the actual cable.

Wipe off the inside of the glass with a Kleenex moist with Windex
Wipe off the face of the speedo with some Q-tips moist with Windex

Lube the bearing bushing with Sewing Machine Oil -- One drop.

My speedo was bouncing for awhile before it quit. The cable was fine. It ended up being a bent dog ear on the speedo drive on the wheel hub. Straightened it up and fixed the problem.
