My friend has a 1982 Yamaha XJ650, single caliper front braking system, and any time you depress the brake lever it moves the caliper and the brake rotor.

We just installed a stainless steel brake line and now this issue is happening. I tightened down everything on the caliper, the rotor, and the front end and nothing seems to be working. The system never has worked very well but now it is even worse.

    Any ideas?

    I assume you're talking Maxim.

The caliper will pivot a bit. When you say it moves the rotor I assume you mean it deflects the rotor. If that's what is going on something is wrong at the caliper.

The caliper should pivot freely. It's not bound up is it? Is the heavy plate washer at the top of the caliper, between it and the fork?

The inner and outer pads are different. I don't think it's possible to mix them up but you might double check.

    Yeah, it's a Maxim.

The caliper is actually one we got off ebay since when we got the bike the front end was pretty much destroyed and there was no caliper. It didn't come with any mounting hardware so we just put long bolt through it to mount it to the fork. I know this isn't right but I can't find a picture anywhere of the proper mounting for it and in the service manual all it says is "remove caliper". No pictures or anything.
