Picked up an '81 xj650 last week, its my first bike besides mx bikes and the plan is to turn it in to a bobber. But first i want to start replacing everything.
I pulled the airbox cover off and there was some funky air filter in there that looks like a half cylinder not attached or anything so im looking for a replacement but i have no idea what to go with. And i also want to replace the brake lines....

So what are your recommendations for brakes or air filters? And im on some what of a budget.

Thanks in advance for any input!

The stock air filter is a "funky half cylinder" and it's held in place by judiciously placed ridges in the cover.

Stick with stock unless you want to start a carb-tuning fight. Even a K&N can prompt re-jetting.

Your brake lines do need replacing; it's worth the few extra $$ to upgrade to stainless. You'll also NEED to rebuild both the caliper and master cylinders; not expensive and VERY necessary.

Visually inspect your REAR BRAKE SHOES first: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=15874.html

Check with XJ4Ever (logo/link in site banner, upper right) for the correct parts at very reasonable prices.

Hi there Big P and welcome......as well as the brake stuff [front and rear] check your tires for age......also, get the rebuild kit for your calipers - everything rubber or plastic on your bike is now 30+ years old...check out the caliper from my 82 xj650RJC:
