so far so good...lots of tear down, some modifications, and the roadmap is starting to come together.

    beginning..

next was time to tear the monster sized signals and extra brake lights off.

I pulled off the old clunky stuff, and mounted little clears up front, and yellows out back. I moved the rears to the shock mounts, instead of behind the fender. (mainly because I took the fender off too)

Next...it was time to tear down the rear fender. I took off the huge taillight assembly, and the plate frame, and the rear portion of the fender. (the front half is still inside the frame) I cut the seat pan down shorter, and cut and shaved the seat foam (which is in good shape) down lower. Still comfortable, but not as bulky.

Seatpan not cut, foam cut...to show how much seatpan I took off:

after the seatpan cutdown, the rear end is starting to take shape a little.

much shorter and cleaner on the rear end. I left a little seat pan there to mount the rear "cafe style hump" to. I didn't want to cut it too short and not have a way to mount the rear cowl piece.

Next...the bars. Those old school bars were just awful, so I swapped them out for a nice set of clubman low bars.
here's a shot of both on the risers, to show the difference in position...

and here's a couple of other shots of the front, showing how low the bars are...looks much better.

Overall, its starting to come together...

Next up is a seat cowl. I'm looking for an older tank to cut down and mount up, I think. (might go the FG route, but I'll play with the metal idea first)

Then, lots of little things. Painting some bits black, side panels need attention (modification? removal and replacement?) And then I'll look into paint and covering the seat/cowl area. (I'm leaning toward a white with blue trim paint scheme...maybe)

Fonz, I have a set of clubmans for sale. Pulled them off and replaced them with superbike bars, my back was killing me without rearsets. cruzerjd

cruzerjd's absolutely right. I got clubmans and I spend most of my riding with my feet up on the passenger pegs. I really need some rearsets.

Re: Brocolli's 82 seca cafe project progress...

So I fell into a spare tank from a purple kawasaki...(blech!) and decided to try my hand at cutting it up and making my seat cowl portion out of it.

    before:

I cracked it with my dremel and a bunch of cutting wheels...

and started to toy with the bottom of it. I wanted to leave a little bit of metal on it to mount it to the seat pan, rather than mounting it to the frame rails. (I'm keeping my hinges, I hope)

After a while, I think I've got it the way I like it...(mocked up, not mounted yet)

From the rear you can see the little loop that mounted it to the frame on the original bike. I'm thinking that's going to be a perfect way to mount my plate. (I have thoughts of integrated flush mount LED's for tailights...or a vintage one mounted above the plate from that little loop.

So far I think I like it. It give the back end a nice tapered finish, and I like the look of it in contrast/along with the tank curve. I'm hoping this weekend to get it mounted to the pan, and see if that's going to work the way I hope it will.

Your bike is looking great !!!! Love the cafe racer style!

Noticed your seat foam isn't smoothed out yet. Just a pointer that worked very slick for me...... I used my 4 1/2" angle grinder, and a flap style soft disk to shape my seat, and it made very nice work of my seat. Just be sure to use light quick strokes, so that it doesn't grab the foam. A 1/2 worn out disc works best.

Keep up the good work, and documentation!!! She's looking good!!! 8)

    Re: Brocolli's 82 seca cafe..updates 1/19

    updates...

everything other than the tank has been sanded and primed, and is 90% ready for paint. (I haven't pulled the tank because it's full, and haven't hassled with it yet) I cut the front fender down about 2 inches front and back, and that's looking good.

I installed new grips and bar end mirrors, and I like the look, but haven't decided whether the mirrors are staying grey, or are going to be black.

I've got my upholstery guy all set up for the black vinyl for the seat, and the padding is cut and done, just waiting to be dropped off for the seat cover. The seat cowl came out really nice, and I've installed the taillights I'm going to run with.

They're a cheapie set of dual cateye lights, but I really like the way they look on the bike.

Overall, I really like the look from behind the bike now.

So I've been slaving away in the basement attempting the $50 dollar paint job route, and the paint's coming along pretty well. Other than the tank, which is full of fuel, so I haven't taken the time to pull it yet. That's next weekend's project. I think.

Anyway...the cowl, fender, and side panels are done, and I'm pretty happy with how everything worked out. Its a good 10 foot paint job. (From 10 feet, it looks amazing. up close, there's some imperfections, but that's okay.)

I'd rather paint it myself and have it be 90% great looking with some imperfections, than have cop out and have it painted. :)

Up next...the tank. I may add 2 small grey stripes outside the center blue stripe once it's done. I haven't decided yet. I want to take a peek with the tank done before I decide if I want to add the grey.

I've also got ot touch up the front fender. Getting that thing back in was tough, and I scratched a couple spots. :'(

Dude!!! That is a righteous looking Seca! Love the rear cowl and the paint. Are you gonna add fork gaiters? It will give it a very English cafe racer look. I wish I could run the clubman bars, but with arthritis I am just lucky to be able to ride with the stock setup. I've ridden cruisers for about 37 years, and am really looking forward to cafe racer riding. I always liked sport bikes, but cant deal with the ergonomics of the newer ones, but the Seca fits nicely.

I'm debating gaitors. I'm going to swap in a mini speedo and tach (from mikesxs) to clean up the cluster area, and I'm debating whether they're worth the hassle of putting them on. I hate the idea of having to disassemble the top of the triple tree just to add the gaitors.

I need a set of gaitors that are wrapped on and fastened, not slid over the top. :D

I wonder why nobody has made gaiters that slip on and then fasten. They make replacement universal joint boots like that for front wheel drive cars, why not for fork gaiters?
