If you check my gallery, you will see a picture of my speedometer and its broken needle. I am sure what broke off is still in there somewhere, but I hesitate to open it up to fix it. I would think one cannot open the speedometer because it would be too easy to change the mileage on it then. Can I open it up, and if so, how? I would like to know how fast I am going, lol..

man, you must've been really bookin' it to break the needle off! :)

the speedometer is kind of a self-contained assembly that is removable from the instrument housing. so shouldn't be too big of a deal.

The cover comes off pretty easy. I took mine off to repaint the speedo.

Warning: If you do take the cover off, don't use anythng but water to clean the instrument faces. Rubbing alcohol strips the paint right off of them.

Check out the parts diagram on the Yamaha site to see how gauge cluster is assembled.

Maybe I am missing something here, but how can I find the diagram for a 1982 motorcycle there? It says it only goes back to 1998?

    Try this LINK.

You will need to scroll the year window down after you pick motorcycle. Yours is in there.
