OK guys, any good tips on replacing a broken exhaust manifold stud? I was able to drill it out of the cylinder block. Can I tap the hole and insert an over sized stud? HeliCoil? Make my own?

if you have drilledit out clean and straight, i strongly recommend using a heli-coil. they are FANTASTIC.

    You got some options.
Depends on how you feel about "The Look"

HeliCoil is going to need to be Tapped and INSERTED with a Special Tool.
If the Hole was tapped clean ...
You can use a Hardened Cap Screw (Looks nice.)

You can get an Oversized Stud. No problem.
(You'll have to enlarge the hole on the Collar.)

If the clock was running and I had to get you back into the Coast to Coast Race, ...
I'd Tap the Hole "Next-Up" (Metric or SAE).
Open the hole on the Collar with Dremel Grinding Bit.
Anti-Seize a Hardened Cap Screw and button it up.
    Let you finish the Coke.
    Then, wave buh-bye. You're outta there. !!!

I'm thinking a little more information would be helpful. I personally hate broken bolts, but its not something to give up on... usually the last thing I will do is drill it. But since you have done that already... did you drill the entire bolt out, using small bits from center, and gradually increasing? or did you use an easy out? Reason I am asking, is if your original threads are damaged or not? If they are, then I would suggest you open it up and use a helicoil, they do work quite well from past knowledge. Next time, if you think your going to break a bolt off, tap it with a hammer, apply cracking lose force.. if still doesnt come, spray with penetrating oil and let stand for 15 minutes and apply heat, then try taking it out again.

Thanks for the replies. I went with the HeliCoil. This engine came with 5 of the studs missing and one broke. Hopefully when I get around to putting it in the frame the manifold will match up.
