I just bought a 83 midnight maxim 750. It has a wire or cable that is broken. It is between the clutch cable and handle bar, on the clutch lever mount. What is the cable for?

    Any help would be great.
    Thanks

    Does your clutch work?
Is it the large cable (clutch) on your right hand perch or the small cable ("choke")?

Sounds like the clutch safety switch

It's not the clutch cable and it's not the choke. It may be a clutch safety switch. I just have it sitting in place. If I touch it it falls off. What would happen if I didn't have it? How hard is it to replace?

The bike could decide to go for a ride on its own. :) It's there to kill the engine if the bike is put into gear without the clutch lever pulled in.

Not very. Push the old one out of the handle, push the new one back into the same hole. There's probably a locking tab or two, but nothing drastic.
