I need info from someone who has an original 1980 XJ650 Maxim, that still has the side covers with the "Maxim-I" emblems on them......I need to know what the peg spacing of on the emblem mounting studs (that reach through the side cover and are secured with star nuts) is.....both sides. Thanks!

I don't have my calipers handy, but my trusty tape measure reads 4 inches center to center. Both covers are the same

Hey Winston, thanks. Now, are the emblem pegs more-or-less the same vertical position on the emblem, top-to-bottom, or is one offset to the top of the emblem, etc.?

What I'm trying to do is figure out whether the 1980 and 1981 side covers are the same physical part. The 1980 models used the "MAXIM-I" emblem and the 1981 covers used just a "MAXIM" emblem, and I'm trying to determine whether the position and/or placement of the emblem mounting studs were in the exact same physical location, which in turn will determine whether the side covers are the same, or whether they are drilled differently between the two years.

If you or anyone!) have an extra MAXIM-I emblem, I'd love to borrow it from you....condition is not important. Or alternatively, I could send you a 1981 MAXIM emblem and you could test-fit it, but it's rather difficult to remove these emblems without shearing off the thin studs on the back.

    Thanks again.
